Best frozen custard around. Rich and creamy. Worth the drive from wherever you are. Delicious vanilla and chocolate and a flavor of the week. It's been this way since I was a kid (yes, a long time) and the quality has not changed one bit. If you insist upon eating your dinner *before* dessert and haven't done so already there are a couple food stands in the lot. Take Route 231 for a beautiful drive to eat frozen custard in a beautiful, pastoral setting.

First frozen custard ever and it was so good. Wish there were more flavors though. There's truly nothing better on a hot day than going to a small ice cream stand and enjoying a good cone that you didn't over pay for. (:

Good custard, nice people, seating and feel. A little remote but wanted to check it out after the Gray Animal Farm.

Authentic frozen custard. Delicious! Flavors today were orange-pineapple, red velvet cake, vanilla, and chocolate.

It's been awhile since my last visit. When in New Gloucester...go to Hodgman's--at least that's what the locals say. They feature two "flavors of the day," along with their standard offerings of vanilla and chocolate. Yesterday's flavors were blackberry (the edible fruit, not the failing smartphone company) and lemon. I opted for the former. Genuine frozen custard (the kind Hodgman's makes) adds a touch of egg yolk, and this is what I'm told distinguishes frozen custard from commercial ice cream. Legally, custard only has to contain 1.4 percent egg yolk by weight, but some brands have more. I'm guessing that Hodgman's does, but the young lady at the window couldn't say. If I had to characterize the taste, it was richer and creamier. The blackberry flavor was vivid, also. I bet the lemon would have made me pucker. Cones are $2.95 for a regular, which was more than sufficient. I will definitely make a trip back before the end of summer.

Smooth and flavorful...mmm it is worth the trip off the exit. Just 3 miles West (on 202) from the Auburn exit (#75) off I95 you will find the best Frozen Custard. They have Vanilla, Choc, and a "Flavor of the Week". This week was Peach and it was AWESOME! The consistency is smooth so if you are looking for something to chew than add some fruit, sprinkles, nuts and put together some kinda concoction. For fans they pack it so you can take some home and have some every night. They have a little covered picnic area and porta potty's in case of emergency and ya just gotta go NOW. Call ahead to hear flavor of the week or just go every week and try em all.

Hodgman's is a perfectly fine place, but this is not soft serve ice cream custard. For those of us used to custard, this is not it. It's good hard ice cream and it tastes like it is made with lots of egg yolk like custard should be. Also they only have 3 plain flavors of ice cream on the day we went: chocolate, vanilla and banana. Who wants banana custard? This place is closed on Monday and Tuesday causing us a wasted trip. Not as great as reported.

This place is good and delicious, but it just doesn't wow me the way it seems to everyone else. They only ever have three flavors at a time: chocolate, vanilla, and the "flavor of the week." People get really excited about this place though. Opening day is like another holiday for a lot of people I know. It's delicious, but I can't pinpoint something extraordinary about it.

By far the best frozen custard around. I could go on for an entire paragraph trying to analyze the combination of texture and taste, but you have to try it for yourself. Just one tip: their "flavor of the week" never disappoints. The service at Hodgman's is always speedy/friendly and the quaint seating area is also a perfect hangout spot on summer nights. This nostalgic little shop is gem of the small town it resides in. 5 stars.

All you need to know about Hodgeman's Frozen Custard is that it is the best, bar none, hands down, no contest. It's worth a pilgrimage from the left coast, which we're about to make. It lives in memory and dreams.

Come on, yelp... add a 6th star. This place deserves it. Hands down, the best frozen custard I have ever eaten, Many custom flavors (one at a time). Wicked good

The Best. I never pass with out stopping by for a cone and getting a quart to take home.

If I had the option between a smoking hot body or Hodgman's Frozen Custard... I'd choose a "medium chocolate on a sugar cone" EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. (I lie: sometimes I go with a small if it's really warm out, because the eating-to-melting ratio is more in my favor then). Seriously, though, Hodgman's - despite frozen custard having an extraordinarily high fat content - is one of my favorite "frozen dairy treats" in the entire world. It's luscious, it's thick, it's flavorful... "To me," Hodgman's "you are perfect." (*Love Actually music starting... now*). I also always appreciate putting money back into my own local economy, and supporting Hodgman's does just that. Others may wonder why they only ever have three flavors at a time. Hodgman's focuses on producing consistently high-quality custard. They have never believed in overwhelming their customers with too many underwhelming options. Plus, there's history there. When Hodgman's opened in the 1940s, they ONLY offered vanilla. Then a year later they introduced chocolate. It wasn't until many, many, MANY years later that they began offering a third flavor which rotated from week to week. Personally, I love that they have never changed from this pattern. It's as if their little dairy farm-turned-custard stand has escaped a too rapidly changing outside world. It's part of the charm when you're there and you either get it, or you don't. On the third flavor.... it rotates weekly (as mentioned above), UNLESS it's the end of summer. Sometimes they make smaller batches of everything so they can offer a fourth or fifth flavor. They update their Facebook page with regularity, so check them out to see what the flavor of the week is. Finally - and this is a MEGA TIP here, friends - in the past, Hodgman's has opened for just one day or weekend around Christmas to sell pints and quarts. Even in winter Mainers need a fix! So.... see you in December?

Flavorless milk ice, skip this one...don't know what any of these other people had. Or perhaps they've never had real custard. But this stuff is not good. Disappointed.

Among the plethora of small ice cream shops that Maine is blessed with - this one rises to the top. Three flavors - the third of which will break your heart if you missed the one they just ran out of (damn it, peanut butter, I will have you someday), but the standards of chocolate and vanilla are great. Recently had a rum flavored scoop and it was delightful. Bring cash.

The best ice cream sundae I have ever had. They have only 2 flavors plus their rotating weekly flavor. Doesn't matter. The ice cream is a perfect consistency and a wonderful mellow flavor. PASS

I would have a longer review but its simple. Hodgmans Frozen Custard has the best custard on the planet.
